Is the internet marketing world restricted to
35 year old white American males? How do minorities
figure into the world of internet
marketing?
In the past week, I’ve noticed a strange “trend” in
my Wordpress stats: People who found my blog with
the tags “African American internet marketing”.
Now, if I’ve been doing my SEO correctly, then they
got to me because of the words “internet
marketing”. But, these inquiries got me thinking:
Is there really such a social gap that Africans
Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanics need their
own internet marketing gurus? Is the web of 2007
still oriented towards 20-40 year-old white
American males?
Affirmative action or well-niched target
markets?
The internet is full of services for
minority owned businesses. General sites like
Minority
Owned Website Directory and
Minority
Internet Services. Or specific sites such
as
BlackReferer.com
(for African Americans) and
Empower Women
Now (for Asian American Women). If there
are so many sites out there for minorities,
obviously that means that there is a huge
market out there, demanding them. I know that
as a consumer, I’d like the products I buy to
be tailored for me as precisely as possible.
So if I’m a twenty-four year-old white woman,
looking to learn about internet marketing,
what could I possibly have in common with
Rich
Schefren or
Rich Jerk?
Minority speak- How do minorities tag their
business?
As in real life, each minority group
has their own way of communicating. When Asians
Americans talk about internet marketing they talk
about empowerment (
Model Minority).
When African American men talk about it , they
talk about power and pride (
EinfoNews) and the
women name themselves “Internet marketing
Divas” (
E-Commerce Diva ,
Internet
Marketing Diva Blog). As for the
Hispanic/Latino population; they seem to be
getting the short end of the stick. You can
find tons of sites telling you how to sell to
this market segment and how they are the
fastest growing minority in the U.S and how
they are huge internet consumers. But I have
yet to find the pride and sense of community
with other Latinos. (This is probably a short
coming on my part and I would be delighted to
be enlightened about this

)
I’m fascinated by the different point of views,
each group has about internet marketing. The way
they sell their internet marketing tells me about
what they really want out of life, as a community
and as individuals.
Money is green
Searching for a specific
minority internet marketing guru, on the web,
wouldn’t yield effective results. Internet
marketing is about money. You could spend a life
time looking for an internet marketing guru, to be
tailored to you, perfectly and specifically. Or you
could just be colorblind and take the free tips,
they give you.

Money (in America) will always
be green. and if you look for the cash, that’s
where you’ll find the likes of
Stephen Pierce,
Ewen Chia and
Diane Corriette.
